I don't know what the hell it is, but I *know* I'm in love with it!
About six months ago, an ex-girlfriend gave me a Hitachi HA-5300 kerbstone-sized amplifier that her brother had abandoned in her loft as broken - she still knows my perverted tastes. Power on, but no audio, except for phono 2 - one of those long 9" switch rods had popped out of place. I fixed it into place, rotated said, and the amp worked. After cleaning it inside and out, I took the DC offset (right: 61.3 mV, left: 41.1 mV), tested it through some "deniable-agent" speakers, and put it into storage as a back-up amp or party special.
I use four-Ohm speakers (can't afford any others at the moment, so I'm stuck with pleasing them) and had decided it was high time to replace those sagged-out power supply caps on my main-squeeze 50 Wpc Kenwood. No sweat, I could use the Hitachi for the next week or so.
To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting too much, sonically, from an amp that discretely advertised itself as a "Dynaharmony" Class "E" power-stage Amplifier (pre-power jumpers on back), despite the build quality. Loud, yes, but with possible "buzz-saw" overtones... Weren't Class E amps used, mainly, for producing raw shortwave? Hitachi?
Now I'm in love. I won't bore you with details. All I'm saying is that this amp seems to do everything that I'd want an amp to do. The sound blows me away, but I'm not prepared to blow speakers to confirm my feeling that it doesn't sag, all the way to the top, with a 4 Ohm load. I *love* this amp - it's the way I half-expect the Kennie to sound with the new PS caps and diffs. Only way more powerful. And the phono stage! Think I've got a nice amp, no matter what anyone says about the deviant internal architecture. And by adding a top-notch pre-amp, surely...
Does anybody know anything about the basic healthcheck on this 17"x7"x14" behemoth? I could download generic front-and-back pix other model, if nobody's ever heard of it. There's one (marked L & R) pair of trim-pots on the board, and I don't think they're DC offset. I'd like to bring it down, it's not coil-toasting, but if it could improve the sound, I'd like to hear it done! She runs warm, but I'm not too worried. I just don't want to smoke those MOSFETS - it looks like the transistor equivalent of a V8 engine in there.
Now, how the hell do you set the bias on one of these?!Hitachi HA-5300
As far as I can make out and source off the Net, it *isn't* a Class E - Hitachi just called it that, way back in the mists of Japan. I *think* it may be a dual-rail job of some shape, perhaps one of the first ever produced. How it works is Greek to me - and I've learned so much about Class AB's via this site! I can't believe I'm saying and understanding half these things.
I'd like to know the damping factor on this bugger - it's controlling those 4 Ohm ported speaks like Bonzo's drumskins on the last night of a tour - I *love this amp!* The Kenwood has a spec. Damping Factor of 40, so with 4 Ohm's, doesn't that make only 20... No wonder this Hitachi sounds so good in comparison. Definitely a big boys amp... Is size and output voltage really that important to overall fidelity? Sure sounds purty a-playin' Hayseed-Dixie right now, at any volume. This must be what they mean by "dynamic headroom" - banjo duel!
Any help on this one would be seriously appreciated. I've heard you've got to be careful with these big amps and overbias - I'd be heartbroken if it spontaneously smoked. I've never owned anything that sounds this good before.
