OA116 Renovation

Post by Rony »

I live in Switzerland and I'm new to this forum. I bought a pair of sonab oa116
speakers back in 1978. Woofer an midrange units are damaged by now, but the
rest is still in good condition, so I want to renovate.

Which speaker drivers do you recommend to replace woofer and midrange units?
Can you name models and supplier? What impedances do I need?

About the wheels: On my speakers the rubber rings on the wheels are broken
(Kendrick Ball Castors). Are there any spare parts available?

Thank you in advance for your advice. I can't wait to get my sonabs back to
work.

Replacement for your mid and woofer are hard to find, i would recommend to refoam the edges.

Thank you for the advice. I have never done a refoam job before. Is it difficult to do? What parts do I need and where can I get them? Do you have detailed instructions? I appreciate your advice.

Hi

If you are going to do it your self search for decware or speakerbits.
They ship worldwide and have good info on their websites.

If you don't want to do it your self you can ask a better shop for PA-systems, someone knows how to re-foam or re-edge the speakers.

Best regards

Thank you Martin for your advice.

What about the new Carlsson carlsson B65-oa speaker elements? Can I use them to replace Woofers and Midrange units?

HiFiKit tells me, that only 8 Ohm units will be produced in the future. Do I have to modify the OA-116 to use these units?

I really appreciate your help

Rony,

I have repaired the drivers (edgeing) on my two pairs of OA2212 - maybe you want to look for some of these threads here - the detaile discussions around this you can see there.

Maybe this is of use to you.

Thank you Coles, this really gives me hope to restore my oa116.

Is it difficult to remove the bass unit for repairing? I understand that the bass reflector tube is glued to the floor of the speaker box and the wires to midrange and tweeters are taped to this tube. Can you just take the floor off the box?

I think that the wires are long enough, so it's possible you just open the floor. But I'm not quite sure. Perhaps you have to remove the wires to the tweeters and midrange first. Don't forget to make a drawing, so you can put them back in proper position (+ to + and - to -).

You loose all the screws (12 pc?) on the bottomplate. Then it's "just" to remove it. But the old rubber seal works as glue, so you have to use mild violence in an intelligent way.

Good luck

Sounds good. Do I have to replace the rubber seals as well or do I just put the floor back in place after the bass units are reedged?

If rubber seals have to be replaced, what products du I need?

Are there more rubber parts to be replaced, e. g. speaker suspensions or filter suspensions?

I have a lot of questions, but I want to get as much information as possible before I start the renovation.

Hi

Just to check, You have read the restoration section on the homepage?
It covers a lot of these aspects but not perhaps all.

Best regards
