CarlssonPlanet 1.5 Released

Post by Jonathan »

For a very long time now I’ve been talking about a new version of CarlssonPlanet, CarlssonPlanet 2.0, “coming soon.” For various reasons, the development has been delayed over and over again.
The real problem is that I need phpBB 3.0 to be released before I can continue with the development. The first BETA for that is due within the next few weeks, and since we’re looking at at least 3-4 months of BETA and then maybe another month of Release Candidates, I decided there’s no way we can wait that long and still keep the old design and code of the old site.

Hence, I decided to make what you can see at http://www.carlssonplanet.com today. It’s not perfect, it’s not final, but it’s much better than what we had, and this is how it will look until CarlssonPlanet 2.0.

It is also a “preparing for 2.0” (hence 1.5) in that the new addresses for the pages will be the same on 2.0, “history.php”, renovation.php” etc, so there won’t be another mess-up of links and such once 2.0 arrives.

Currently, I’m going through all the pages, fixing links and images and other things, and until the weekend, expect there to be errors here and there. But that doesn’t mean you can’t report them, if you notice something wrong, always report it, so I don’t miss it. Don’t expect me to reply to all reports though. ;-) But I want you to know that I appreciate it.

Mac-users:
I have developed this new design with one thing in my head: Compatibility. Preferably with all browsers and all systems. But since I don’t have access to every single browser and system, I can’t be sure that it actually works and looks nice, so I would love to receive reports from people who uses Mac, *nix, the more uncommon browsers etc. E-mail me and tell me what works and what doesn’t. Actually, this of course applies to everyone, if you notice something that doesn’t work, report it! I want to know!
Thank you for your help.

About weird-looking border images:
There is a known bug in Internet Explorer 6.x that causes transparent PNG images to appear as grey. This is unfortunate, and looks ugly, but there isn’t really anything I can do about it, since it works in ALL other web browsers (including Internet Explorer 7.0).
For more information about this bug, see:

My suggestion if you want to fix this is to either change your browser to one that complies with Internet standards more than Internet Explorer do, like Firefox ( http://www.getfirefox.com ). Or if you want to stick to Internet Explorer, update to Internet Explorer 7:

Tell me what you think!
Now, I want comments on the new site! All of them! Suggestions! Praise! Complaints!
I'm willing to listen to everything. As a webmaster, is it sometimes very hard to know what is best for your users, or what function would really make the life of the users better, so please TELL me, if you have an idea.
