I already have OD-11 + OA-12 and the possibility of buying a cosmetically rather scruffy pair of OA-14.
My interest in restoring the OA-14 is to upgrade the bass performance by adding a woofer, most likely connected directly, ie. not via the crossover (I have an interesting pair of Acoustic Research Holographic Imaging M4 speakers that have an upward firing bass speaker run without crossover - it works very well in that speaker).
My question is simply : has anyone already done this, as it seems like an obvious thing to do ? There appear to be two alternatives, (a) find a suitable 6,5" driver and mount in the base, firing downwards in a similar way to the OA-116 (although a tighter fit), or (b) use a larger woofer mounted in one side (Boenicke-style http://boenicke-audio.ch/w11_c/). Whilst option b might present greater challenges to fit, as it would affect the cabinet bracing, it would give options in firing the bass units towards each other or apart, which apparently gives posibilities for cancelling bass nodes in the room (if that is the correct terminology).
Apologies for writing in English : I have been reading a lot here using Google Translate, which has improved greatly in recent years !
Thanks for the link : I had already seen the reference to using the Satori driver in place of the SC165 for the OA-14.momus wrote:Please check Carlssonkult.se and let google translate.
Or did you mean the suggestion for improving the bass performance of the OA-116, using the SEAS unit ? This does at least show me that if I choose to fit a downward-firing 6,5" woofer, I should fabricate an entirely new bottom board.
... but I have still not dismissed the idea of a larger, perhaps 10", side-firing woofer (perhaps this will be too difficult in practise, but I wlll have to open up an OA-14 first).
And, of course, perhaps a pair of sub-woofers, passive or powered, is a much simpler - & maybe superior - solution ! In fact, if I choose the sub-woofer route, I could simply keep the OA-12 in service & forget about the OA-14... I have a JBL Digital 10, probably not too difficult to find another.
There's going to be a delay in reporting further, however, as the turbo on my BMW X3 disintegrated on Friday, so I am not yet sure when - nor how - I will be returning home (Klosters is nevertheless a very beautiful place to get stranded... ) !
OK. two subs for cancelling room modes. I don´t know anything about that.
