”The Three Way Speaker”

Tell A Friend Tell A Friend

During the nineties until his death in 1997 Stig Carlsson worked on completing his big dream – ”The Three Way Speaker”.

Driver units for the speaker are rumoured to already be designed. The Carlsson trust is working with the preparation for a production but no introduction of the speaker has been made and the design work is secret.

When our Swedish editor, Per Gulbrandsen, visited Stig Carlsson in May -96, Stig brought out a strange looking wooden thing from beneath his workbench. Stig enthusiastically described it as the top part of the planned three-way speaker. In this design all drive units were to be located even closer to the back wall then compared to the 50 series. Furthermore the tweeter and the midrange were to be surrounded by some sort of device which technically meant that the units were to be horn-loaded. The woofer was to be mounted backwards, firing into the box.
Per Gulbrandsen says: “It was extremely interesting and if there is one model that should be taken into production this is it! Although it will be much more expensive than all other Carlsson designs”.

Comments from Martin Dellstig:
"This, of course was prior to the introduction of OA-58 and the coming OA-60.
Some understanding of the concept can be gained from looking at the sketch from the patent application for the OA-51."

There is no reliable information regarding drive units, filters or over-all design outside the inner circle of the Stig Carlsson trust. However it is no secret that Stig Carlsson for one period was very interested in the German ceramic units. These are used in modern high-end speakers today but are associated with cone break-up in some frequencies. Stig Carlsson is also supposed to have developed several new woofers, some with very low sensitivity.

Today there is no financial possibility to start production of these speakers. However time will tell.
